Near system lockup

When I start Mame 0190, it basically stops responding in the console and it can (not always, not sure why) show a black fullscreen window. Trying to stop mame with ctrl-c in the console window (only possible if the black fullscreen window isn't shown) fails as does killing via task manager (had to log in as a different user to try to kill mame). It is not possible to stop/kill mame once started and I have to reboot windows (10) to get rid of the mame process.
This points to a driver problem, but how do I debug which driver is causing this problem?
