MAME crashes when rom is loaded

I tried with many different roms and it always crashes. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. I also tried changing the sound/video driver in MAMEUI and no luck.
First off, you mentioned MAMEUI .. are you talking about the MAMEUI binary, or just referring to the settings in the MAME from MAMEDEV.org?
What version are you using? I would suggest starting MAME in a command box then try starting a game: EG mame64 pacman -window -verbose
I would examine that output from the -verbose command and see if there is any conflict or failure. It could be something as simple as a mis-selected ROM folder, or romsets which may be out of date.
