I just tried the cassette versions of those games and they work fine. The cartridge versions from the coleco list don't work though.

Make your roms read-only. I can't see how MAME could kill your roms in any case.

where the paths are changed, making it seem that your roms aren't there any more.

The software lists are the xml files in the hash directory. You don't need them in order to compile.

But if you're wanting to remove the functionality of software lists from MAME, you can't.
