Re: I can't seem to map certain ports to a custom configuration file.

That hasn’t been true since MAME 0.234 – you can override specific controls for a system in controller configuration files: Documentation: https://docs.mamedev.org/advanced/ctrlr_config.html#overriding-defaults-for-specific-controls Relevant change: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/37157461313...

Re: Error while compiling MAME 0.237 in Visual Studio 2019

It’s not the toolset that regressed, it’s the C++ standard library. I’m pretty sure Nathan “Bletch” Woods wrote that code using Visual Studio in the first place, and I built MAME with whatever version of the C++ standard library it is that was installed with Visual Studio 16.11.3. The trouble with I...

Re: Error while compiling MAME 0.237 in Visual Studio 2019

As far as I can tell, it’s a regression in the Microsoft runtime library. There’s nothing in the code that should require the object to be copied, but since some update to Visual Studio, the queue container started tying to instantiate the copy constructor. See here: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/...

Well I’m struggling to think of the use case for it. Do you anticipate people querying your instance of it? Would you expect people to use this as a component in their own front-ends or web sites? Are you trying to suggest that MAME itself should expose a REST API? A MAME front-end or web site is go...

I had a look at https://mame.spludlow.co.uk/ and it seems rather disorganised and lacking links, or the kinds of information or features that people would actually want. We’ll be making a few changes to the Windows binaries from MAME 0.193 onwards. This will only affect pre-built Windows binaries distributed from mamedev.org and github.com – packaged source won’t be affected, and default build settings won’t change. If everything goes to plan, the following changes ...

There have been some changes to -listxml output, and questions about how to use it from front-end authors. Attn frontend developers: machine flags in XML

We're hitting the limitations of the driver element and its attributes in MAME's -listxml output. To allow for inheritance, better deal with systems with configurable slots, and make handling of machines and devices more uniform, this element is being deemphasised, and some of its attributes are dep...

Re: [Q] Externally modular vs internally?

It would also be rather difficult to actually implement MAME as a bunch of dynamically loadable cores in a way that would work on OSX. Keep in mind that the Mach-O loader that OSX uses doesn't allow shared libraries to have undefined symbols. Users of devices call out-of-line non-virtual methods all...
