LUA text is rotated for vertical games

I am writing a LUA script to display game metadata. Unfortunately, draw_text() is rotated for vertical games. Is there a way to maintain correct orientation of text rendered via LUA?

Semi-related - draw_text() is currently very limited. There is no way to change font size, weight or face. I appreciate that this is as a result of the BDF fonts used by MAME. Are there any plans to add support for TTF fonts at any stage?
