Strange Problem with Asteroids Deluxe

Hi all,
I'm having an issue where Asteroids Deluxe will not display the bullets, either from myself or from saucers. What troubleshooting steps should I take?
I'm running Linux (specifically Lubuntu) on an old Netbook. While it's a low-spec machine (HP Stream with 2 GB ram), it should be capable of emulating a game this old with relative ease.
