What Version Of Mame To Use?

Hi, I recently downloaded a romset on archive. org,

I'm wondering what set of Mame this set was made for. Is there a good way to check what version I should be using as a lot of my roms say they are missing files and I think it could be a version problem.

According to https://www.mamedev.org/oldrel.html the release dated 2016-05-25 (as per description in archive.org page) is MAME 0.174

Thank you for the reply. I tried .174 with my romset and the games still aren't working. Does that seem to be a trustworthy romset in you're opinion? A lot of the games are working but games like Marvel Vs. Capcom, the punisher, etc. are still not working.

Re: What Version Of Mame To Use?

Well, TBH i think you are trying it the wrong way.
Basically you are starting from a romset, and trying to find the matching version of MAME: this is not the correct way to go.

You should instead to the opposite: choose a MAME version and find/create the matching romset.

My suggestion is that you use the LATEST available MAME version from this site (at the moment it's 0.226) and find a romset suited for it. Or you learn how to use a ROMs manager tool (e.g.: CLRMame) and use it to reconstruct a working romset for your specific MAME version.
