Pull request and compilation question

Hello,
I forked from mame repository, made some changes, compiled and tested.
I would like to open a pull request, but I realized that I did not create a new branch in my repository (my branch is still "master").
Is it important ? If so, what should I do ?
Also, wich IDE should I use for debugging (on Windows 11 / x64) ?
So far, all my attempts failed with Visual Studio Community.
