You really don't need any additional front end to use MAME as it has a capable front-end already embedded in the emulator. General help can be taken from here:

The basic overview is simple:
- Visit
http://mamedev.org/release.html and download the latest release appropriate for your operating system.
- Install the download package in whatever folder you choose
- If you have roms to use, simply place them in the ROMS folder that is produced from your install. You can get a number of free for non-commercial use romsets from mamedev directly off the site @

- Simply double click the MAME/ MAME64 Icon (depending on package) and a selection menu will pop up. ESC will exit your game if playing a game and return to menu, ESC while in menu will close MAME.
That's it. Just play around with it and you'll see it is much easier than people generally think.
