Mame 252 black screen win10

Mame 252 works fine with win7 but not win10
when trying to launch any game, I get a black sreen that's difficult to recover from even using ctr-alt-del.
I can launch task manager but I can't navigate to it, the black screen persists and I have to log out and back to regain control of the computer.
