Tektronix 4404 and ncr5385 usage

Hi,
I have a Tektronix 4404 that I have restored and had started a Tek4404 emulator when I came across the Tektronix 4404 emu in MAME.
The MAME emu seems like it has had a lot of work put in on it and seems to do everything right. It currently fails when the ncr5385 which does the SCSI handling times out.
I am looking for information as to why. Is it because the ncr5385 expects an emulated scsi disk to respond? Or something else - I was unable to find another MAME project that uses the ncr5385 chip emulation to compare.
Keen to get it working as I have an HD image with every piece of Tek4404 software - and lots of software I have written for the tek4404.
